Unitech student charged

National, Normal

A THIRD year mechanical engineering student at the University of Technology, who was charged with two counts of attempted murder, was granted K1,000 bail by the National Court in Lae last Friday.
The charges of the male student, in his 20s, from Chimbu, who is married and has a two-month-old child, stem from last month’s fighting at Unitech.
In court, he begged presiding judge, Justice Ellenas Batari not to keep him in state custody.
He said his life would be in danger if he was kept in remand at Buimo.
After releasing him into the care of guarantors, pastor for Jesus Life Centre at West Taraka, John Are, and owner of FTM Constructions John Ross, Batari referred his case to the
lower court for committal hearing.
Other directions ordered by Batari include a travel ban. He is not to leave Lae without both
the court’s and his two guarantors’ knowledge.
The court also warned him not to interfere with key witnesses, keep peace at all times and to attend church services every Sunday.
In the meantime, he is to report to the officer-in-charge of police prosecutions every other Friday.
