MADANG’S Hockey team is gearing up to host nine visiting sides for the coming National Hockey Championship in Madang next week.

Team president Bonny Samen said Madang hockey was of a good standard.

Samen said the men’s team won bronze at the last PNG Games and believed they would do better in this championship.

“Thirty-six male and female players of both junior and senior divisions have trained for the past weeks and will come good in this championship,” he said.

He said Junior Bonny Samen and Fidelis Koroba should dictate the game to give the local side a chance at a medal.

“Our women’s team placed  fifth during the PNG games and should improve on this,” he said.

He said preparations for the tournament were going well.

Samen said all teams would be accommodated at Tusbab Secondary School while Laiwaden Oval would be the venue.

Other teams confirm to participate in the tournament starting Friday were Port Moresby, Manus, Gabensis, Goroka, Wewak and Kokopo while Bougainville  dropped out.
