Madang roads getting the needed attention

Letters

THE poor road conditions and other socio-economic issues in Madang have finally reached the attention at the national level.
National Court judge Justice David Cannings, the former resident judge of Madang, summoned the leaders and senior public servants in the province to answer to the deteriorating service.
Credit goes to our favourite daily The National as well, for continuously publishing deteriorating road conditions in Madang town.
Madang in the past decades, has been tagged as the pearl of the Pacific by the Tourism Promotion Authority.
Sir Peter Barter, a local businessman, has tried all along to keep Madang beautiful and attractive when he was the governor.
He is still striving to keep Madang beautiful through his private businesses.
Today, the once beautiful Madang is just a memory of the past.
It is a slap on the face for our chest-beating leaders of Madang who sit in their comforts while the people suffer eating dust roaming in the town.
Infrastructures are deteriorating, law and order issues are increasing and the public service have fallen apart.
Madang is currently a dust-ridden township with crater-like potholes in all roads in the town.
I do not know which roads the Madang politicians and bureaucrats use when travelling in town.
If they use the same roads then they would have been fixed years ago.
Just imagine, if the status of the roads in Madang town are in dire need of maintenance, what will be the condition of other infrastructures and services be like in rural parts of the province?
In fact, road accidents have increased in Madang recently as a result of the bad road conditions.
The second hearing will be next Monday and Tuesday, where our leaders will respond to the summons.
We all will be in the National Court house to witness the hearing.
It will be interesting to witness the blame-game and passing of the buck by our leaders in the court house.
The underlining issue remains, comply with the summons and fix our roads as soon as possible.
I lift my hat and salute our human rights judge – Justice Cannings for putting this issue in the spotlight.
You have done the same with the provincial police headquarters and cell blocks.
Your effort will be fruitful with the town’s roads as well.
Thank you Justice Cannings for reminding our leaders to answer for the deteriorating roads in Madang town.
