Magistrate urges remandees not to refuse police files when served

A magistrate has told those in remand at Bomana prison not to refuse their police files when they are served as this would delay the court process.
Waigani committal court Magistrate Paul Puri Nii said this yesterday when presiding in the attempted murder case of Mauten Haralu, 29, from Maria village, Tari-Pori in Hela.
Police prosecutor Sgt Christian Iga informed the court that Haralu refused to receive the police files from the police informant when he went to Bomana prison to serve him the files on June 25.
“The accused Mauten Haralu went into hiding when the police went to serve him his files,” Iga told the court.
Magistrate Nii told Haralu and other accused who were present in the courtroom that it was a must that they should all receive their files. “Receiving the files from the police does not mean that you will remain in Bomana forever,” he said.
“Police have informed me that your files are completed so you have to receive them and bring them before the court so we can assess them.
“If you do not want to receive the police files, you will remain in Bomana without any justice.”
Police alleged that on March 10 in Erima, Port Moresby, Haralu allegedly discharged a homemade gun which almost shot and killed James Jange.
