Man who allegedly assaulted girlfriend to stand trial

A 26-YEAR-OLD man charged with assaulting his girlfriend will stand trial in the National Court.
Otten Goimba, from Moga village, Western Highlands, was charged with causing grievous bodily harm on Anna Nolwai after an incident on July 30, 2019, in Port Moresby.
Magistrate Paul Puri Nii at Waigani on Thursday committed Goimba after he chose to not to say anything in his Section 96 statement.
Magistrate Nii said there was sufficient evidence to commit Goimba who allegedly punched Nolwai her in the eye outside a restaurant two years ago.
He said even though the accused had denied the charge the evidence was deemed sufficient by the court to proceed to trial.
The defendant was given the opportunity to make a statement.
Magistrate Nii told Goimba had been given three options in relation to his Section 96 statement – he could address the court orally; remain silent; or submit a written statement.
Goimba chose to remain silent leading Magistrate Nii to adjourn the matter to Aug 29.
“My final order is that Goimba be committed to stand trial in the National Court for the offence of causing grievous bodily harm to his girlfriend pursuant to Section 319 of the Criminal Code Act.”
Goimba’s was extended bail.
