A MAID accused of stealing money belonging to her employer has denied the offence, saying she had always been a loyal worker in the 11 years of her employment.
Maria Gull had worked as a maid for Shuilan Zang who had to go to Australia for a medical operation.
It was discovered later that K5,000 (in K100 notes), AU$3,000 (K7,796.36) and US$1,000 (K3,537.09) had gone missing. Police prosecutor Snr Constable Peter Samghy said before the complainant left for Australia, she gave her room key to Gull.
Defence lawyer Bosky Koke from the Public Solicitors Office told Committal Court Magistrate Tracey Ganaii that the prosecution case was based on circumstantial evidence.
“The circumstances in which police witnesses gave their evidence and their statements, you’ll find that they do not directly confirm that they saw the accused taking the money in the complainant’s room,” he said.
“They have given evidence to show that at the time that the money was lost, the accused was around. They are all pointing fingers at her.” He said the other person in the house who had keys to the complainant’s room was the granddaughter who had since left for overseas.
“During the daytime, the accused and her colleagues, who are house maids go to the house to perform their duties as house maids.
Around 4pm and 5pm, they leave to go to their various homes.
“The only person who resides in that property is (the granddaughter. She had all the time. She left PNG on Jan 24 and went overseas and she never came back.”
The court heard that Gull had been working as Zhang’s maid for 11 years and had no previous offences.
Magistrate Ganaii adjourned the case to Jan 12 for a ruling.

  • Stop this nonsense, poor-bashing. Why is the rich employer accusing this poor trusted housekeeper of 11 years when clearly it could have been the grand-daughter? She should be questioned as well if the house was left to her alone during the period grandma was downunder!

  • This is pathetic. No one physically saw Gull taking the money. So how can one prove that she stole the money?

  • That’s a slap on the face working for someone for 11 years and now being accused of stealing…fuck that’s crazy
