Mairi cautions Dabaris on ownership issues

THE Dabaris club is owned by affiliates in the province and should be independent, according to Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) Southern Confederate director Gwaibo Mairi.
He told The National last month that he welcomed the recent announcement by the Central government to sponsor the side but warned that ownership should be left alone.
“The club has its own constitution,” Mairi said.
“From what I understand, the constitution provides that the club is owned by PNGRFL-affiliated leagues in Central.
“Which means no sponsors or politician should have their hand on the ownership of the club.
“While I appreciate the support of the provincial government as every club needs financial backing, the management of the Dabaris should revert to the constitution to run the club.”
In response, Dabaris chief executive Hubert Warupi said the Central government did not own the Dabaris but said they were a major shareholders of the club who would have the naming rights going forward.
