Pole backs talents in squads

PAPUA New Guinea goalkeeper Ishmael Pole believes a mixture of upcoming Kumul Petroleum National Soccer League (NSL) talents and experienced players will form a strong national men’s team this year.
The 27-year-old is among six players omitted from the two 2021 train-on squads after they were caught drinking during the 2019 Pacific Games in Apia, Samoa.
It is understood that Pole and the group have appealed the PNG Football Association’s (PNGFA) decision and are awaiting the outcome as they look to be re-instated into the Black or Red 30-man squads.
The Hekari United custodian, who helped Bismarck claim the Wawens Cup on Sunday, told The National that the NSL had unearthed upcoming players who were capable of shining at the international level.
“Although I was not picked, I was happy to see many youths make the squads,” Pole said.
“I’ve played against and alongside these youngster in the NSL.
“There’s so much potential, which is a good sign for the future of the national team. With a bit of guidance from the experienced players, I’m sure they’ll develop into better footballers.”
The Kagua native, from Southern Highlands, said he would like to see the creation of more development pathways like the NSL.
“We have been depending on experience over the years,” Pole said.
“When I joined the national team, there were experienced players who were willing to guide me.
“It’s important that we continue this approach.
“We should have enough experienced players to provide guidance.”
Meanwhile, he said he had already apologised to PNGFA over the Pacific Games indiscretion.
Fellow experienced PNG internationals Raymond Gunemba and Nigel Dabinyaba are also suspended.
