TWO current Papua New Guinea Orchids players, Catherine Anjo and Lilah Malabag, have been selected in the Palais extended train-on squad for next year’s Sydney and Hong Kong sevens tournaments.
Anjo plays on the wing or at fullback while Malabag, pulls the strings in the halves for the Orchids.
Former Orchid Mala Mark is also in the squad after an impressive performance at this month’s Rookie Sevens at Bava Park in Port Moresby.
Malabag had represented PNG in AFL before making the transition to rugby league.
Another code hopper, Helen Abau’u, made the transition from the Palais to the Orchids before returning to rugby.
Vero Waula, another former Orchid, made the Palais for the Oceania Women’s Rugby Championship in Fiji last month.
During the Rookie Sevens, a lot of rugby league players participated in the tournament and only the fortunate ones were named in the Palais squad.
“We would love to welcome Euan Mackintosh, our new strength and conditioning coach who the ladies have learnt so much from in just five days,” the Palais said on their Facebook page.
“We would also openly welcome a few new faces — Mala Mark, Lilah Malabag and Catherine Anjo — in the PNG ICTSI (International Container Terminal Services Inc) Palais extended train-on squad after a great performance at the Rookie Sevens tournament held at Bava Park.
“We would love to extend our ‘thank you’ to everyone who works behind the scenes to make this camp possible.
“Our Palais are looking greater every day and exciting times are ahead.”
