Nigel Malagian’s winner in the Madang Soccer Association grand final against Wagsford on Saturday was reward for the Tusbab Blue Kumuls after the club helped him complete his education.
Malagian spent two years with Tusbab and it will all come to an end this week after completing his Grade 12 exams.
When Malagian, pictured, graduates on Sunday, he will be part of Tusbab’s history of footballers who had gone through the programme to receive an education and play soccer.
Like many young talented footballers, Malagian left school to pursue his soccer interest and could not continue his education.
Fortunately for him, Tusbab Secondary School had given him the chance to complete his education through an arrangement with the club.
Coach Rachael Wadunah said the club had an arrangement with school for footballers to pursue their education while plying their trade with the Tusbab Blue Kumuls.
The programme was developed by Wadunah, who is also a teacher at the school, and supported by principal Alphonse Igag.
Malagian moved to Tusbab in 2016, leaving some Nabasa fans disappointed.
It was thirty seconds before the final whistle on Saturday when Malagian headed home the winner to send their fans into a frenzy.
Wadunah praised Malagian for leading by example to secure the title this season.
Malagian’s winner was his 35th goal this season, five of which were from headers.
