A MAN, 30, appeared before the Lae Committal Court was accused of fraudulently tricking Ela Motors in Lae, into obtaining a 75hp Yamaha outboard engine using a fake bank cheque.
Pisa Randa, from Buiebi village in Mendi, Southern Highlands, appeared before Magistrate Pious Tapil on Friday.
He was alleged to have gone to Ela Motors with an accomplice, between June 11 and 19, and obtained a quotation for a Yamaha 75 engine.
They later pretended to make a deposit with a fraudulent cheque for K23,200 into Ela Motor’s account.
It was alleged that they then took the deposit butt to the company and collected the engine. Police reports indicated that after a day, the bank called Ela Motors and informed them that the cheque had bounced and was fraudulent.
It was then that Ela Motors realised they were cheated.
Some days later, Randa requested again for a quotation, this time for a new Toyota Landcruiser from Ela Motors. The quote sent to him was K206,176.
Then a cheque deposit of that amount was made to ANZ Bank in Madang for Ela Motors in Mt Hagen.
The signature was similar to that of the previous cheque.
Police said Randa was with other suspects outside Ela Motors in Mt Hagen waiting to pick up the vehicle when the company (Ela Motors) security apprehended him.
The others fled.
Randa was detained and later picked up by Lae police who arrested and charged him.
The case will return to court on Oct 4.
He was refused bail.
