A MAN in Port Moresby was arrested and charged last week for impersonating a police officer and causing fear in public with a police-issued firearm, police say.
National Capital District Met Supt Perou N’dranou said Michael Badui, 60, from East Sepik, was arrested and charged after his family members reported him and his son, Michael Jr, after they allegedly threatened them using a number of police-issued firearms.
“His son (Michael Jr), even though not a member of the Royal PNG Constabulary, normally brings around police uniforms and police firearms to his father’s residence at Konedobu,” Met Supt N’dranou said.
“Badui and his son were seen armed with high-powered police-issue firearms on July 11, 22 and 27.”
Met Supt N’dranou said after receiving the complaint, police obtained a search warrant and searched his residence on July 29.
“Police found some items, including a high-powered firearm which he used to post a picture of himself on social media.”
Met Supt N’dranou said Badui was arrested, interviewed and detained at Boroko cell the same day.
Badui appeared in court the following day (July 30) and was granted bail.
He appealed for the return of the firearm but was denied.
Met Supt N’dranou said police would continue their investigation into how Badui acquired the police firearm and uniforms in the first place.

  • Check their credentials. These men are more of a criminal nature than ordinary men. For the father, he is 60 years old. He should be more mature in his behavior.

  • That is a very big concern that the police didnt even know the firearm was missing!!! This is serious loss of command and control, the weapon should have been accounted for at Hand over Take over of Shifts each day, yet it is in the hands of these people instead of police.
