A MAN of Chimbu and Eastern Highlands parentage was brutally beaten to death in the middle of Goroka town on Saturday night. The deceased was identified by relatives as Alois Baundo, in his mid-50s.
He was seen drinking with other men outside the Daewon Trading building in town when he is believed to have been beaten. The cause of the death could not be established by police because the only witness was reportedly lying drunk next to the body of the deceased when passers-by saw them and alerted police. The man was heavily intoxicated and was detained by police for questioning.
Eastern Highlands po-lice commander John Kale confirmed the death and assigned his detectives and a Task Force Unit to investigate. Supt Kale said the death was not election-related.
Kale said he could not understand how people could buy and drink large quantities of beer when the province had a ban on alcohol in place for more than two months now.
A doctor on duty at the Emergency and Outpatients Department of the Goroka Base Hospital confirmed the deceased had multiple head injuries compounded by a punctured lung, broken ribs and internal bleeding.
