BOROKO District Court magistrate Rosie Johnson cautioned and discharged a man who spent four days in custody for assault.
Johnson said the four days spent in custody was sufficient punishment for Junior Moses, 32, from Kompiam in Enga, during a special sitting on Monday. “He should see that as a lesson and change his ways,” she said.
Johnson told the court that there were better ways of solving such problems, without using violence.
“There has been changes in fine amounts of summary offences in 2018 where a court fine not exceeding K4,000 and a jail term of two years has been imposed,” she said.
She told Moses to go home and find ways to solve the matter in a peaceful way since they all lived in one settlement.
She didn’t make orders because there were no probation officers.
Moses was charged with one count of assault.
Police files indicated that at about 9.30am on Boxing Day, Moses without any good reason assaulted Betty Mark at East Boroko, Tari Block, using an iron rod. He assaulted Mark because it was alleged that she had been gossiping about his wife.
Mark reported the incident to police and upon interrogation, Moses admitted to committing the offence.
