A MAN claims to have lost more than K10,000 worth of store goods and cash and was assaulted when his canteen was allegedly broken into by police officers in Port Moresby on Saturday morning.
James Tako, from Tari in Hela, said a group of more than 20 policemen in five vehicles turned up at his canteen at Ranuguri settlement in Konedobu between 3am and 4am and forcefully entered the building by breaking through a door and took the items.
Tako, who had been asleep at the time, said he was beaten when he asked why they were there.
He was then taken to the town police station and detained for four hours without being charged.
Tako said his canteen had been closed that night following the state of emergency orders and the police personnel had not explained their actions.
A relative, Maprik Andane, who witnessed the incident, claimed that the policemen were from the Dog Unit and other sections of the police and recalled that one of the vehicle’s plate number was ZPD 360.
Andane said among the vehicles used in the incident were two 10-seaters, one fifth element and an open back.
He said more than 20 officers, all in uniform, carried out the raid.
Andane said they had laid a complaint at the Port Moresby Town police station on Monday and it was registered as No. 204/04 in the Occurrence Book.
Meanwhile, State of Emergency Controller and Police Commissioner David Manning on Tuesday urged the public to report any abusive conduct by members of the police force on the Police Internal Affairs hotline: 3202634.

  • Totally Unbecoming! And Thieves!!!

The Police have been known to be doing this year in year out. Providing a hotline for the public to report has been the only solution thus far! Come on , you should start working on the root cause of such shameful sub-standard service men.
If they had a firm commander and are well educated on their duties , their do’s and don’ts and show some sense of discipline, then we wouldn’t have a disgraceful Police force!!!
It’s easy, revisit your recruitment policies and arm your commanders with leadership! and avidly follow through.

  • Sub standard police officers from Bomana Police training colleague. They don’t even know their jobs.
    What a shame!

  • Proper Internal Investigation needs to be carried out.
They need to be heard, and also find out what prompted them to do such an evil act.
If guilty based on all charges laid against them, then they need to face the full force of the Law.
No body is immune or above them Law.
