A man jumped off a high-voltage power pole in Port Moresby on Saturday and died instantly, say police.
Hohola commander Ben Trepi said they were aware of a person experiencing mental illness climbing up the power pole, jumping off and dying,
“We could not established evidence of who that person is and why he did it,” he said.
“We arrived at the scene late after the body was already taken to the hospital.”
National Capital District Metropolitan Superintendent Perou N’dranou said police and medical people arrived at the scene and took the body to the Port Moresby General Hospital morgue.
Meanwhile, N’dranou said there were a confrontation among Pari villagers last weekend, with police monitoring.
“The incident was suspected to be alcohol-related,” he said.
N’Dranou said police were yet to establish why there was trouble.
He said police worked around the clock to control the rate of car thefts and other major incidences over the weekend.
“We have done the usual weekend drunk patrol,” N’dranou said.
“We have arrested a number of people consuming alcohol in public places, which is a crime and have provided police presence in our communities and streets in the city.”
N’dranou said police continued to maintain a presence regardless of logistic, resources and manpower issues.
