ONE man is dead while three others are in critical condition at the Kikori Hospital following a fatal road accident on Oct 10 in Omati in Kikori, Gulf province at about 6pm.
A white single cabin Hilux allegedly owned by the district’s Catholic diocese centre had been returning from gathering wood when it overturned, station commander Snr Const Jackson Pari said last Friday.
He said a medical worker from Western province died instantly in the accident.
Snr Const Pari said the situation had been tense after the accident, but Kerema police were able to get assistance from a mobile squad who flew into the area from Southern Highlands to maintain peace, with the help of Oil Search Limited.
Snr Const Pari alleged that the driver of the vehicle, the parish priest, who is from Ghana, is in police custody and waiting to be transferred to Kerema town.
Police alleged that the driver had found it difficult to negotiate a section of the road and with the vehicle overloaded with  wood, it overturned killing one of the men on it.
Snr Const Pari indicated that formal charges would be laid pending the outcome of the investigations.
He said this was the first time such an accident had occurred in the district.
