A MAN died after diving for turtles at night with six others in waters off Fergusson Island in Milne Bay, according to police.
Acting Southern Command Region Police Commander Chief Superintendent Rigga Neggi said the group had gone out to a reef to look for turtles in Esa’ala. He said it was getting cold and the men were taking a break in the canoe.
But the deceased spotted a turtle below the reef and dived with another to catch it.
The other man was holding the torch while he dived deeper to get to the turtle.
“After attaching the hook, he and his friend (with the torch) swam up to the surface,” he said.
“(But) only his friend reached the surface. The other mysteriously disappeared.”
The group looked for him until morning and raised the alarm.
They found his body later.
He was then buried after a customary funeral ceremony.
