STUDENTS involved in an inter-school fight in West Sepik were treated for injuries in hospital before being discharged on Friday, police say.
West Sepik police commander Snr Insp Joseph Poema said the fight was between students of Don Bosco Secondary School and Vanimo Secondary School.
Those injured were treated at the Vanimo General Hospital.
“A fight broke out between the students during the one-week celebration of literacy week,” Snr Insp Poema said.
“We contained the fight with the provincial education officers and teachers from both schools.”
A town resident said the fight broke out when the Vanimo Secondary School students were celebrating their new school bus donated by Vanimo-Green MP Belden Namah.
“The students were in their new 30-seater bus traveling around town celebrating when a teacher from Don Bosco Secondary School told them to stop,” he said.
“A Vanimo Secondary School student swore at him.
“When the Don Bosco students heard about it, they went to Vanimo Secondary School and fought with the students.
Teachers from both schools managed to stop the fighting.
He said on Saturday, while students of Vanimo Secondary School were having dinner, eight students from Don Bosco pelted the mess hall with stones.
The Vanimo Secondary students chased them and found themselves trapped in an ambush set up by armed Don Bosco students.
