Man fined K1,000 after guilty plea

A Lae District Court has on June 10 ordered a 30-year-old man to pay a fine of K1,000 after pleading guilty to two charges of damaging property and being unlawfully on premises.
John Saki, from Kundiawa Gembolg’s Bomkane village in Eastern Highlands, appeared before senior Magistrate Pious Tapil.
He was ordered to pay a court fine of K500 for damaging of property in default five months in prison at Buimo jail with light labour.
Tapil also ordered Saki to pay a court fine of another K500 for his second charge of being unlawfully on premises, or in default would result in five months in prison with light labour at Buimo jail, bringing the total amount of fines to K1,000. If Saki failed to pay, he would serve his sentences concurrently.
Police statements stated that on June 7, at around 10am, the defendant who was allegedely drunk, approached George Lance’s residence and called out to Lance to compensate him for assaulting him.
Lance was in the house with his family.
Saki allegedely swore and threatened them with a bush knife.
The court heard that later in the night at around 3am, he went again to the house and damaged the house by stoning and smashing 15 louver blades that cost about K231.
