A Lae District Court has fined a 28-year-old female charged with stealing by false pretence last Friday.
Magistrate Pious Tapil read out the charge to Elish John from Mure village in Ialibu-Pangia, Southern Highlands, after she pleaded guilty to the charge.
Police told the court that Elish knowingly obtained seven different styles of woven bilums worth K150 each from Jenny Wira.
The court ordered Elish to pay a compensation of K1,000 to the victim or, in default, 12 months imprisonment at Buimo prison.
The police told the court that last June 25, at 6-Mile, outside Lae, Morobe, Elish asked the victim to spend the night with her since she was late and did not have family or relatives living in Lae.
The court heard that the victim and Elish were from the same village.
The police summary in court said Elish saw the bilums hanging on the wall and convinced Jenny to give her the bilums to sell in Lihir New Ireland, because the bilums were in demand there.
The court noted that Jenny gave Elish the eight different bilums with agreement that she could sell seven and keep the eighth as her commission.
After three months, Jenny called Elish who asked her to send her bank account details where she would transfer the funds but Elish never did.
