A MAN is in custody following a shootout with police in Gerehu, in the National Capital District on Wednesday night.
Commander Northern and acting Commander NCD/Central Assistant Commissioner Peter Guinness said the man was among a group of five suspects who were allegedly involved in a car-jacking when police intercepted them.
Guinness said five suspects allegedly armed with guns and knives held up a motorist in a white Honda CRV at Daka Street, Gerehu Stage Two around 6pm and drove off with the vehicle.
Guinness said about 20 minutes later the same suspects used the Honda CRV to allegedly rob a second victim at Gerehu stage One, in which, a grey Mark X sedan was stolen.
He said Gerehu Police Station and several support units, including Criminal Investigation Division personnel were dispatched by the Police Operations centre to pursue the suspects.
Guinness said the suspects drove the two stolen cars into Tauraganiga Street before separating into Daka Street and Karuka street in Gerehu Stage Two when police spotted them and gave chase.
Suspects in the Honda CRV drove towards Siraka settlement and fired shots at police before fleeing the abandoned vehicle.
Guinness said the suspects in the Mark X sedan were intercepted at Gerehu where it was abandoned. One suspect was arrested by police.
Guinness praised members of the constabulary involved in this operation for their courage and determination that led to the arrest and recoveries. Police investigators are continuing.
