A NEW Ireland woman is in stable condition at the Kavieng General Hospital after her husband allegedly stabbed her in the stomach, killing her unborn eight-month-old child.

Police have charged the husband, Tony Gaby, 56 from Muschu village, East Sepik, with one count each of wilful and attempted murder.

Acting provincial police commander Oena Afeke said the alleged stabbing took place at a village near Simberi. Police said Gaby had suspected his wife of having an affair with a man in the village.

On one occasion, when she returned from a trade store, the couple got into an argument, with the husband more convinced his wife was having an affair.

He picked up a bush knife and stabbed the woman in the stomach, killing the unborn child.

The woman was rushed to the hospital and operated on.

She is now in a stable condition.

Afeke said there were proper avenues to sort out domestic disputes and people should not resort to taking the law into their own hands and killing innocent lives.

Meanwhile he said the special police operation conducted during the festive season resulted in numerous arrests of people involved in homebrew and drug consumption.
