A MAN who stole K57 to buy drinks has been ordered to pay a K400 court fine or serve a seven-month jail term.
Mount Hagen District Court Magistrate Betty Jacob found Albert Pal, 23, of Wara market in Margarima, Hela guilty of stealing.
She took into account the fact that Pal was a first time offender and had pleaded guilty to the crime.
The court was told that last Friday, Jan 17, in Mt Hagen at around 4pm, Pal was drinking with his friends at the street market when they saw Robert Kerowa walking home.
They blocked him while Pal took the K57 from his pocket.
When Kerowa realised that his money was missing, he held Pal and with the help of bystanders, took him to the Mount Hagen Police Station.
Pal pleaded guilty.
“I made a mistake and want to ask this court to have mercy on me. I will not do it again,” he said.
Magistrate Jacob said stealing was not good and it must be stopped.
