Man sets himself on fire: Beli

A MAN in East Sepik has burnt to death after setting up a bonfire with tyres and jumping into it, provincial police commander Supt Albert Beli says.
Supt Beli said the incident was reported at Wewak’s Wharf Road area but information was still sketchy.
He said it was the second such case of suicide.
The first, he said, was in 1996 when a soldier from Moem Barracks poured kerosene all over himself before setting himself on fire.
Commenting on the weekend incident, Supt Beli said abuse of homebrew and drugs was affecting young people in the province.
He said police were still working on the case.
But from what they gathered, the young man put together tyres, set them on fire and jumped into the flames.
“He was burnt and pronounced dead when arrived at the Wewak General hospital,” Supt Beli said.
“The body is in the morgue.”
