A MAN in his 20s was killed by a knife wielding suspect at Surumba village, East Sepik, last Thursday night.
The deceased was slashed on the forehead with a bush knife by a man who was in the company of several others who launched the horrific attack. An eyewitness who did not want to be named said the village had gathered together and discussed funeral arrangements for another youth who had died at the hospital the previous week when the assailants attacked. The cause of the attack is not known but is allegedly related to the earlier death.“There was a gunshot a few yards away and they stormed into the open area, chasing away the people but it was unfortunate for the young man who was lying inside a makeshift tent and who had no time to escape,” he said. The villagers, who have been traumatised by the killing, have deserted their homes and are living in makeshift homes in the bushes or with relatives in the nearest villages.
An ambulance under police escort travelled to the village on Friday and transported the body to the Wewak General Hospital mortuary to await police investigation and subsequent funeral arrangements.
Wewak police station commander Richard Rafa yesterday said he had yet to be briefied.
