POLICE Commissioner David Manning has urged Papua New Guineans to be vigilant during the Christmas and New Year holidays.
“Robberies and car thefts are on the rise nationwide,” he said.
“While Christmas is a time for reflection, forgiveness and spending quality time with family, there are those out there who want to bring harm.
“So, be vigilant when travelling, be wary of your surroundings and suspicious-looking people.
“Every year-end, robberies and car thefts increase during festive seasons.
“Lock your cars, park in clear places, when a vehicle is following you drive to the nearest police station and seek help.
He said the message shared by Governor-General Grand Chief Sir Bob Dadae that crime was rife in PNG should be taken to heart by everyone in the country.
“Christmas police operations are already being conducted by all 22 provincial police commanders.
“Roadblocks are being set up to stop drink-driving, and to help keep the roads safe, including from accidents.”
NCD Metropolitan Supt Gideon Ikumu also said tents had been set up at strategic locations and at major roundabouts for police inspection.
