Too many political parties: Somare

Founding Prime Minister Sir Michael Somare says there are too many political parties in the country.
“I hope one day, we will have a two or three party system in this country,” he  said at his farewell luncheon at the Parliament State Function Room on Tuesday.
Sir Michael, pictured, said there were now 40 political parties in the country which was too many.
“We should develop a party system, a two or three party system, that will make your party recognised,” Sir Michael said.
He said Papua New Guinea should be “one country”, however, the many political parties were causing so much division among  people.
“People should only have one, two or three parties.”
“We have to think nationally and internationally.
He said Papua New Guinea should develop a political system based on two or three parties, comparable to developed countries such as  Australia, New Zealand and others.
