PRIME Minister James Marape appeared before the Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the Union Bank of Switzerland loan deal on Friday.
During his brief appearance, Marape told the inquiry that he had been on a pre-scheduled visit to New Zealand and Solomon Islands last month and apologised for his earlier non-attendance.
“I was on a scheduled visit to New Zealand and Solomon Islands so I sincerely apologise for not respecting the inquiry and not being in attendance on the scheduled date,” he said.
“Thank you again for giving me this opportunity to present myself as a witness to this inquiry.
“I will accept the dates you set for me to come before the inquiry from today onwards,” he said.
Marape presented a preliminary letter and documents with some responses that set the chronology of events.
COI chairman Sir Salamo Injia said Marape was required to give evidence in the first part of the inquiry. Sir Salamo said Marape would follow the order of former prime ministers and give evidence later, after all the other ministers had made their appearances before the inquiry.
Sir Salamo said between now and April 21, once the counsel assisting the commission and the solicitors were on board, they would contact Marape to prepare his evidence to ensure that it was focused and simple with relevant evidence given.
Marape will be required to give evidence on the background information on the UBS loan and the IPIC loan as he was the finance minister back then.

  • Millions of tax payers money was wasted to conduct so many commission of inquiries in the past and not a single person has been prosecuted. Can the PMJM revisit the previous commission of inquiries and prosecute those persons implicated? The current Government under PMJM wants to take the corruption issue head on so for fairness and to show the ordinary people of this country that your leadership will not tolerate corruption, then please revisit the past commission of inquiries and prosecute those implicated.
Also can the PMJM set up another commission of inquiry into the following as well.
    1. Manu Manu land deal.
    2. Konebada petroleum Park. ( What happened to all the money allocated)
    3. Central City Setup Funds, What happened to the money allocated.

  • Has we always said, No One is Above the Law, meaning any human exist under clouds of PNG is bind by PNG Law. Well-done PMJM, our Good Lord Bless you and your administration when you captain and sail the Stormy Sea….!!!!
