Tenants warned to pay rentals

NATIONAL Housing Estate Ltd (NHEL) is warning its tenants in Port Moresby to pay their overdue rentals or face being kicked out.
NHEL is the commercial arm of the National Housing Corporation and has been given the rights to operate again as a commercial entity.
Acting chief executive Madeline Paulisbo said overdue rental owed by about 250 tenants is K6million.
“The tenants residing in the NHEL vested and managed properties, especially in Manu Auto Port – Korobosea, Red Cross – 3-Mile, Henao Drive – Gordon, Saraga – Kanage Street, 6-Mile and Tuene Street Tokarara have for the past six years ignored monthly invoices and rental arrear notices and even tenant survey forms that were served to them,” Paulisbo told The National.
“Many of these tenants devolved from the former National Housing Corporation management and have refused to increase their rentals to the new rental increase of K150 a fortnight for a bedsitter, K250 a fortnight for a two bedroom unit and K350 a fortnight for a three bedroom unit.
“Currently, the rental arrears in all estates have accumulated to K6million, plus mounting chronically. This has led to serious loss of business and the lack of finance to maintain the properties, not to mention operational deficiencies.”
Paulisbo said NHEL was embarking on a turnaround, and focusing on its business charter and plans to ensure that money owed was recouped for renovation and rebuilding and ensure it brought back value to its properties and shareholders.
“The (recent) public notice from the Minister for Housing and Urban Development Hon Justin Tkatchenko confirms the advice to all tenants in the estates to start paying rentals to the NHEL,” she said.
“Many of these defaulters are senior public servants who are paid housing allowances however, do not comply with the requirements of paying a very minimum fortnightly rent to NHEL.”

  • Just tell them to vacant the properties and get new tenants. Working people like me living an the settlement at the highly rate with no water and pit toilet. I think i really need this house.

  • Those tenants are fortunate to have this opportunity living and should do as the Minister NHC & NHEL coming with this notice. Better give them a dead line to off set their outstanding or could be kicked out. Impose a penalty it they don’t pay in the period given.

  • Please people be responsible and pay dues.
If not comply Strong actions should be taken by the responsible government authority.

  • Issue them warning letters already! if they don’t comply, move them out… there are literally hundreds of families living in Port Moresby that can easily afford to pay K150 , K250 and K350 a forthnight without making any fuss about it… NHEL-action speaks louder than words- if you are serious on recouping your K6 million arrears…

  • it is about time…Simply kick them out as they cannot keep to their agreements.

  • WE THE GOOD CITIZENS ARE LOOKING FOR SUCH AFFORDABLE ACCOMMODATIONS, VACATE THEM IF THEY DO NOT OWN UP TO PAY THE BILLS.

  • Vacate them all and they will see how hard working and honest citizen pay rental fee in other rental places

  • Like wise I have been evicted without due process by NHC officials in collaboration with shady characters through ”under the table deals” I and am still paying the rental for 5 years now thru every fortnightly salary deduction, for section: 13-lot:02 formerly and now sub divided into S/13-Lot 10-11-12 Currently I am not living at the National Housing Corporation house and we are in need of assistance from NHC. you geting free money and complaining about outstanding arrears and how about those who are paying rentals but not haven’t been provided shelter by you?.
