MARIJUANA uprooting in the Lai Valley local level government of Mendi-Munihu district is progressing well but funds are needed to help the youths venture into other business activities as promised.

Youths who destroy homebrew producing equipment and marijuana plants were promised by MP De Kewanu that he would help them venture into little business activities to sustain their livelihood.

Lai Valley local level government president Jack Saul told The National that awareness was carried out successfully since last Christmas and a good number of people voluntarily surrendered homebrew producing equipment and uprooted marijuana plants.

He said to make the awareness successful, he appointed committees in different council wards to extend the campaign in their respective areas to prepare youths to surrender the illegal items to police. “There are many who are yet to surrender and need the presence of the police to stand together with councillors and community leaders to urge them to surrender,” Saul said.

“We need funds to successfully destroy their illegal items.

He said the initiative by MP Kewanu was successful and law and order problems in the district have decreased.

“Today, the district has a good sealed road.”
