MARLINS Yellow are this year’s Lae Softball Mix Slow Pitch champions proving too strong for IS&T Manalos in the grand final at the Eriku oval in Lae on Sunday.
Led by captain Thomas Kisokau, Marlins Yellow posted a convincing 15-6 win against Manalos to start off the softball campaign in the country’s industrial capital.
“Winning the slow pitch tournament was quite exciting as the majority of the players are new to the sports code (softball),” Kisokau said.
Despite a hard fought resistance by Manalos, they eventually drowned under the waves as Marlins soared home with a series of home runs towards third inning.
Marlins wasted no time getting points on the board in the best of three innings of the grand final.
“The newcomers came with an eagerness to learn with support from the experienced players,” Kisokau said.
“As a team, it isn’t just about skill, it’s about fostering discipline, respect, and fellowship among teammates and promoting healthier living habits on and off the field. That is why we get to win the game.”
Paul Keleu led Marlins to restrict Manalos at the end of the second last inning with an 8-4 lead.
Manalos were restrained to only two points in the match-ending inning, falling short of matching up to the added seven points by Marlins, who won 15-6.
In earlier matches, Tigers SC defeated Puma D10ers 13-12, Marlin Black beat Bismark SC 10-9 and Jets beat Nadzab Reds 9-8.
