PAPUA New Guinea Kumuls coach Michael Marum has congratulated forward Wellington Albert on joining English second-tier rugby league team London Broncos for the new Betfred Championship season.
Marum said the 27-year-old’s reputation had helped him earn a new deal despite his run of injuries over the past two seasons.
The former SP Hunters coach said Albert’s signing would boost the Kumuls for next year’s World Cup in England.
“Wellington is an experienced forward in the Kumuls, so his new deal is wonderful news for us,” Marum said.
“We congratulate him for continuing to find new opportunities.
“Given the type of player he is, we will need his services for the World Cup.
“We’re just hoping he has an injury-free season next year.
“Although he has gone through a few injuries, he has proven what he is capable of.
“It’s great to see him fully recover and earn a new deal in England’s tier-two rugby league competition.”
The former Leeds Rhino said his contract was a season-long deal, but there was an option for a second year.
Meanwhile, Marum said he was monitoring all the eligible players who were plying their trade in the United Kingdom and Australia.
The one-time Rabaul Gurias coach said he was hopeful that 2022 would be an injury-free season for all the players who were on his radar.
Marum said rugby league’s showpiece event was going to be tough for the Kumuls with the world’s top rugby league-playing nations expected to take full-strength squads to England.
