BREACH of cyber security is a national threat with severe economic and social consequences so government departments and agencies must have necessary measures to protect critical systems and services, Communication and Information Technology Minister Timothy Masiu says.
“Cyber attackers and hackers are now using sophisticated technology to hack computer systems and attack critical government infrastructures and services,” he said.
The Government had endorsed the national cyber security policy directed by the National Executive Council decision 348/2021.
“The Government has also added Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to be a member of the National Security Council to advise on matters of cyber security concern,” Masiu said.
“This is a huge recognition for the minister and the department, so onus is now on the department to continue to build its technical capabilities.
“With the endorsement of the national cyber security policy, is incumbent upon respective government agencies to ensure the important public assets, systems and services under their custody are highly protected from cyber security breaches.”
Masiu said the department was developing a cyber security strategy that would translate the policy goals and objectives into action strategy.
“An audit will be carried out across all public bodies in the first quarter of 2022,” he said.
“It will establish baseline understanding of cyber security vulnerabilities and weaknesses within the Government.”
