RAKE Junior Maul scored the winning try to help Tarangau shut out Butterflies 4-0 in their Under-20 match of the Port Moresby Rugby Football League competition at the Santos National Football Stadium on Sunday.
The week-eight match of round two ended on a high note for Tarangau as they recorded their third straight victory.
The match started slow as Tarangau struggled to find a smooth combination between the pivots Chris Jama and Quinten Gale.
Maul led his forwards as Tarangau had the upper hand in attack.
Butterflies, on the other hand, fed off hooker Anderson Ala in the first 10 minutes, but were poor in attack.
Maul’s unconverted try came off a Butterflies error five minutes from halftime.
Both sides remained scoreless in the second half as Tarangau defended their lead until fulltime.
Club president Jason Yamason told The National that Tarangau competed well despite not fielding their regular players.
“Most of our regular players didn’t show up due to the general election,” he said.
“It was not our best game, but a win is a win.”
Yamason said his men could have extended their lead in the second half, but they lacked communication.
“Most of our key players, including our halves, didn’t play,” he said.
“Our forwards didn’t perform like they do each weekend because some of them are new to the team.
“The players were scrappy, so we didn’t score more points.
“But we’re expecting a full team next week to maintain our position.”
