SIBLINGS Colita and Sugar-Ray Hakena are preparing to compete in the July 15-17 Wollongong Winter Junior Event in New South Wales (NSW), Australia, with the aim to improve their universal tennis ratings.
Last week, the pair competed in the NSW Junior Closed Championships — their first international appearance — with more than 280 players competing across three divisions.
Sugar-Ray competed in the Under-16 singles and bowed out in the second round while Colita reached her final and beat Tia McIntosh 6-1.
Sugar-Ray and Colita were named as first and second runner-up in the junior male and female category of the 2022 SP Sports Awards in May.
“We moved them to a college in Sydney a week after the awards and they’re doing well,” mum Diana Hasavi said.
“They’ve never been overseas, and have done all their training and fitness in PNG.
“But their Sydney coach Luke Bourgeois was happy with them for hitting the ground running upon arrival.
“He is working on improving their game.
“Sugar-Ray, 14, has a rating of 6.0 while Colita, 12, started with a rating of 5.0.
“They’re working hard to improve these ratings.”
Hasavi said the pair would not compete in the West Pacific regional championships in Fiji where other PNG juniors would be competing.
“They will instead compete in Tennis New South Wales tournaments to improve their ratings,” she said.
“They are hopeful that they will be considered for wildcard entries to the Pacific Oceania Junior Championships as PNG representatives in the Western Pacific team later this year.”
The siblings will continue training and competing under Bourgeois.
