KUMUL and Catalans Dragon David Mead says life in Perpignan is a far cry from his Papua New Guinea and Australian lifestyle but insists he has adjusted well in the French city.
The former Brisbane Bronco and Gold Coast Titan was signed by the Super League club on a three-year deal at the end of 2017 Rugby League World Cup. Speaking to Papua New Guinea Rugby Football League (PNGRFL) chairman Tsandis Tsaka on Fulltime Reserve, the 31-year-old said his first year was tough after spending nine seasons in Australia’s National Rugby League.
“When we first arrived here, I thought it would be a lot easier than what I first expected,” said Mead, who remains confined with his wife Taneal and sons Paxton and Coven at home due to the Covid-19 lockdown in France.
“While I was in Brisbane, I was going through the papers and I thought moving around the country (France) would be exciting with new challenges.
“In our first day when we got here, we went to a McDonalds drive-through.
“Because of the language barrier, my wife asked if I was sure about going to the drive-through.
“I said that I’d give a try. You might as well start somewhere.
“I ordered two Big Macs and one Happy Meal for my son (Paxton) and when we went to collect our order, we got some apple juice, an apple and some barbeque sauce.
“It was tough. I couldn’t understand what people were saying. You get a bit frustrated and they get frustrated as well. It was tough for about six months and then it got better. We got to understand people’s body language a lot better.”
Mead, who turns 32 on Nov 4, says he continues to enjoy his time in France despite the challenges. His contract expires at the end of this season, which has been suspended indefinitely due to the pandemic.
