BRONCO and Papua New Guinea Kumul David Mead says he is determined to help Brisbane’s feeder club Wynnum Manly Seagulls win the Queensland Intrust Super Cup premiership.
The Adam Brideson-coached Seagulls, who fielded five Broncos players, beat Kumuls forward Luke Page’s Burleigh Bears 22-14 in week one of the finals at BMD Kougari Oval in Brisbane earlier this month.
Kumuls back Nene Macdonald’s North Devils and Wynnum Manly have this week off as they prepare for Sunday’s grand final qualifier (12.15pm kick-off) which will be the curtain-raiser for the National Rugby League (NRL) grand final at Suncorp Stadium.
Wynnum Manly will face Tweed Heads Seagulls and the Devils will battle Kumuls prop Luke Page’s Burleigh Bears for the other spot in the Oct 10 grand final at Moreton Daily Stadium in Redcliffe.
“I am happy to be part of Wynnum for the finals series,” 33-year-old Mead told The National last week.
“I spoke to coach Adam Brideson and, when the Broncos season had finished, he wanted me to be a part of the side. So for that, I am grateful.
“I think fellow Broncos Jesse Arthurs, Selwyn Cobbo, Richie Kennar, TC Robati and I are a good addition.
“But the Wynnum players who have not been at the Broncos, have done well to put the team in this position.
“It would be great to win a grand final with them. They are a great club.
“Hopefully, I can contribute and help claim a trophy for them.”
The specialist winger commended Wynnum Manly’s non-NRL players for their sacrifices and commitment.
“They play tough and compete hard in every game,” he said.
“Most of them have fulltime jobs, and they work all day and train at night.
“To be able to do that and compete hard every week is a huge credit to them, and I’m grateful to be part of the team.”
