BRISBANE Broncos veteran David Mead says he is considering retirement from rugby league when his contract runs out at the end of this National Rugby League (NRL) season.
“I’m leaning towards finishing this year,” the 33-year-old responded to The National yesterday.
“My love for the game is not as strong as it used to be. I think this is going to be my last year.
“But I haven’t made that decision 100 per cent just yet.
“I’m more excited about what’s next than continuously running into rugby league.”
The Tubusereia villager is yet to play an NRL match this season, but he is leaning towards helping develop upcoming players following his retirement from representative football last month. “I now prefer to peel some oranges on the sideline and bringing water bottles for the players who are running onto the field,” Mead said.
The former Kumuls skipper made 15 Kumuls appearances.
Mead has so far scored 75 tries across 171 NRL appearances for the Broncos and Gold Coast Titans.
“It’s going to be a journey,” he said in Port Moresby yesterday.
“I’ll speak more about that when the time comes.
“But looking at the future, junior rugby league is what I want to focus on.
“Getting involved with junior programmes is something I want to pursue,” the outgoing Kumuls skipper said.
Mead said he would be happy to help develop rugby league in his village and mentor junior players.
