MEDICS, from the school of medicine and health sciences, have set out to reach the University of Papua New Guinea Rugby League finals in Port Moresby this year.
“We’re proud to have Nambawan Medical Centre as the major sponsor of Medics,” coach Tom Chris said.
Nambawan Medical Centre backed the team earlier this week with funding and a new set of jerseys.
Centre managing director Stuart Malai said the company would continue to assist the team over the next two-to-three years.
“We see this as an opportunity to give back to the community by supporting our local club,” he said.
“As their sponsor, we hope to promote rugby league and get the players to appreciate the sport by way of commitment.
“This is just the beginning and will continue to assist in terms of finance, upon their request.”
Chris said Medics have been a self-sponsored team since their establishment.
He said it was a relief to secure new jerseys after several unsuccessful attempts to secure proper apparel.
“As students, we have faced financial struggles to buy a set of jerseys,” Chris said.
“This sponsorship means a lot to us.
“To show our appreciation, we will do whatever we can to reach the finals.”
Medics are among 13 teams in the league.
