A Lae District Court has fined two men charged with being in possession of stolen property on Tuesday.
Magistrate Jacinta Doa ordered Yawing Tiac, 32, from Huon Gulf’s Nasuapum village, Morobe to pay a fine of K500 or three months imprisonment with light labour.
Doa also ordered Kenneth Jonny Mover, 46, from Kavieng’s Ngavalus in New Ireland and Huon Gulf’s Munum in Morobe to pay a fine of K1,000 or three months imprisonment with light labour at Buimo for being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle, a Toyota five-door land cruiser.
Magistrate Doa made the ruling after the men pleaded guilty in court.
The court noted that both were married with children and were unemployed, Tiac had no prior conviction while Mover had prior conviction that related to a stolen motor vehicle.
Doa said Mover would pay K1,000 fine because he had prior conviction records.
“You have served your time in correctional service but have not learned from that.
“There are many good options to earn money, set examples for your children, be a role model to your children. Both of you pay your fines or if not, three months in light labour at Buimo,” Doa said.
The court heard that on March 24 at around 8.45pm at Leron plain in Markham, Morobe, about six armed men robbed the MCC sub-contractors’ camp, stole valuables and the Toyota five-door land cruiser.
On April 30 at around noon, police received information on the stolen vehicle’s location and while doing a search at Tiac, they found the keys to the vehicle. Police arrested both men and also located the stolen motor vehicle.
