TWO primary schools in Menyamya district, Morobe, have been closed because they have not received the government’s school subsidies.
They are the Ungwimela and Hanguwa primary schools.
A teacher at the Menyamya Primary school said yesterday he was worried that the second quarter subsidies promised by the government under its free education policy could take weeks, resulting in more school closing.
He said term three was coming to a close in five weeks and if funding did not arrive by then, it would hurt as term four was mainly preparing for examinations.
The teacher said most of the money was used for learning materials and should have been sent to the schools by the end of July at the latest.
“This is negligence on the part of authorities as we have used money from the first quarter subsidies, which brought us to June.
“And now we can’t get basic teaching material for the rest of the school year,” he said.
“Parents are refusing to pay as they are aware that school fees are to be paid for by the government and we are stuck.”
