PEOPLE of Chimbu have been praised for their outstanding contributions to the development of the country.

Public Enterprises Minister and Kavieng MP Ben Micah said Chimbu had produced some of the outstanding leaders in the country while paying respects at the haus krai (house of mourning) of Peter Waieng, former defence minister and Kundiawa-Gembogl MP at 9-Mile Morobe Block, Port Moresby.

Micah was accompanied by chief executive officers of various state-owned enterprises (SoEs), most of whom were from Chimbu, and his Malagan tribesmen including their chief.

Micah said New Irelanders had deep-rooted relationship with Simbus in business and politics.

He added he was there not as MP but as a chief of New Ireland and friend of Waieng and Simbus.

Micah described Waieng as “psyched-up, suicide guy, a strong person with a strong will”.

“We’ll get down to the bottom of the matter and get the culprits who caused pains in our hearts today to face the full force of the law,” Micah told Waieng’s family, relatives and his Naur tribesmen and women as well as Chimbu people.

Micah said Waieng had made a lot of progress in a short period of time and he could do a lot more had he not been murdered.

Waieng’s body was discovered with multiple stab wounds at Roku beach, a few kilometres west of Port Moresby early last Friday morning.

Micah and Attorney-General and Justice Minister Kerenga Kua have pledged their support to bring the matter to the attention of the prime minister to direct police to speed up investigations into the murder of Waieng and bring perpetrators to justice.

A person who police claimed was the prime suspect was picked up the same day.

Kua said the relatives wanted police to do a thorough investigation in a speedy manner and brief them.
