PRIME Minister Peter O’Neill yesterday expressed sadness at the death of former Kundiawa-Gembogl MP Peter Waieng.

Waieng, 44, was killed last Thursday night outside Port Moresby.

O’Neill was concerned that Waieng had lost his life so unexpectedly, and requested police to ensure that those responsible were brought to justice.

“I have known Peter (Waieng) since our university days,” he said.

“He was an intelligent young man who demonstrated a determination to make a difference in our community so early in life.

“When he was elected to parliament in 1997, he was only 28. But he proudly took his seat among experienced and seasoned politicians determined to make his people proud.

“His appointment to Cabinet as defence minister in his first term was in recognition of his talent and leadership qualities.

“Although he lost the seat in the 2002 general election, he continued to serve his people and the community through business and other initiatives.

“Peter’s (Waieng) untimely death is a tragic loss to all of us.”
