THE main suspect in the killing of former Kundiawa-Gembogl MP Peter Waieng has been charged with wilful murder, a senior police officer said yesterday.

He appeared in Waigani Committal Court for mention on Tuesday. Police are also questioning a woman described as a key witness.

Assistant Commissioner Police (ACP) Jim Andrews said in Port Moresby that Seviro Ganiga, 29, of Roku village, Central, had been charged of the wilful murder of the former defence minister and diplomat.

Andrews said police were questioning a Shirley Meru, 20, of mixed Central and Northern parentage.

“She is the key witness in the case and is being questioned over the incident,” Andrews said

Andrews said police had yet to ascertain the motive behind Waieng’s murder, adding that investigations would also focus on finding out if others might have been involved in the killing.

He appealed to clansmen and relatives of Waieng not to take the law into their own hands and allow the police investigation to be concluded.

“I also condemn the actions of others in Kundiawa who took to the streets on Monday to air their frustrations by blocking roads and access to the Highlands Highway,” Andrews said.

“The actions of those who went on a riot in Kundiawa must not be tolerated and people should refrain from such actions,”.
