Petroleum and Energy Minister Ben Micah says a new policy and legislation on energy will be introduced in parliament in August.
Speaking at the Pacific Energy Conference in Singapore last Thursday, Micah said this would set down a government strategy to bring electricity and power to the majority population.
He said the policy was an important document for the government as PNG focused on becoming a big player in the export of energy, especially LNG, to the region to power its industries.
Micah told the international energy meeting that the policy and legislation were being finalised and going through its final stages.
“The primary trust of this policy is to allow the people to have access to electricity. The policy will look at the use of LNG for domestic use and export.”
Micah said PNG is blessed with access to readily available and abundant resources to produce energy.
He said the policy and legislation would also deregulate the power sector to enable the private sector to participate in the provision of electricity.
