Milne Bay backs NMSA

MILNE Bay Governor Titus Philemon is confident that the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) will adopt a submission for the recognition and protection of the seas of Milne Bay.
Philemon and administrator Michael Kape are in London to support the National Maritime Safety Authority’s (NMSA) presentation which could see the first Particularly Sensitive Sea Area (PSSA) declaration for PNG.
The PSSA aims to protect the biodiversity of the reefs, atolls and islands at the Jomard Entrance and the areas of Milne Bay used as route for big vessels facilitating trade between Australia and New Zealand and the Asian countries.
Philemon said the Milne Bay Government is seriously concerned with the threats posed to the rich and diverse ecosystems of Milne Bay waters by large freight ships carrying dangerous cargo.
He told the committee made up of more than 500 member countries that Milne Bay is supporting the NMSA with funding to undertake risk assessments in the main sea lanes running through Milne Bay.
He said the Jomard Passage was an issue for Milne Bay and PNG.
The adoption of the PSSA status by the IMO would help protect the environment.
