MILNE Bay’s districts are using home advantage to dominate soccer matches and Central’s Rigo have also proved to be tough contenders in the Papua Youth Games in Alotau.
In the men’s division, Esa’ala One beat Kiriwina 2-1 in round one of Pool A.
Rigo claimed a win over Sohe, courtesy of a forfeit.
On day two, Rigo shut out Kairuku 5-0. Esa’ala One made their presence felt at Alice Wedega Park with a 4-0 crushing of Alotau Rural.
This gave them confidence to edge Kairuku 2-1.
Most of the teams are still working to improve their attack.
The top-of-the-table clash between Rigo and Esa’ala One will decide who is in the box seat to claim the title.
Despite Rigo putting in a sterling performance, soccer tournament director William Vaira said they needed to maintain their intensity through to the end.
“From my observation, they gave away easy goals,” he sid.
“They still need to work on their finishes if they are to advance to the finals.”
Meanwhile, in the women’s division, Kairuku and Rigo played out a scoreless draw. Alotau Rural edged Esa’ala 1-0. But Esa’ala rebounded to sink visitors Rigo 2-0.
