Minister, probe squatter settlement

Letters

THIS is about a land portion (allotment 1, section 111) along Jawani Street, Lae.
This area was once known as Admin Hostel with government hostels owned by the National Housing Corporation (NHC) to house young public servants.
However, during the 1980s, the hostels were demolished to pave way for further proposed developments.
Unfortunately, since then, nothing has eventuated, hence creating opportunity for illegal settlers to flock-in.
One squatter has gone to the extreme of subdividing and selling this area with pretence of having a legitimate land title.
Today this whole area has been springing up with illegal settlers and is a hub for illegal gambling, drug dealings and drunkards causing nuisance.
This area poses a major health risk with no proper sanitation as well breeding ground for pigs which roam the streets, digging up flower gardens, messing up landforms and dropping excretion wastes.
The continuous stench emitted from human and pig wastes is unbearable to the nearby residence.
This illegal settlement and activities thrive in Lae Urban LLG Ward 3 where member for Lae and Minister for Lands & Physical Planning John Rosso is elected from.
I’m wondering if the good minister is aware of this illegal land grabbing at his backyard or turning a blind eye.
If the good minister is not aware of what’s happening at his own ward, then I’m appealing to him as the minister responsible to please do something about this state land as it is literally been taken over by squatters.
It is a time-bomb sitting on his own backyard
For a better Lae and Ward 3.
