PORT Moresby is the hub for air travellers between Asia, the Pacific and Australia, says Acting Minister for Public State and Enterprise Charles Abel.
Abel, who farewelled a delegation led by Prime Minister Peter O’Neill on Air Niugini’s inaugural flight to Townsville on Friday, said the direct service would reduce travel time and fares between the two cities.
“There is a sister-city relationship between Port Moresby and Townsville,” Abel said.
“It will open up tourism, leisure opportunities, education, business, agriculture, freight and sporting facilities.
“This flight will also enable fans in PNG to attend North Queensland Cowboys matches and the Hunters away games.
“Australian fans from North Queensland can see their teams play in Port Moresby.”
The direct service is expected
to assist organisations such as Youth With a Mission on the movement of volunteers and medical supplies.
“We’re working on opening up Lae as an international airport and other tourism destinations include Alotau (Milne Bay), Madang (Madang), Mt Hagen (Western Highlands).”
